Shigeru Ban: Shaping Sanctuaries /「安住の地を紡ぐ」

From April 20 to July 17, 2026, the Japan Information Culture Center (JICC) in Washington, D.C. is presenting Shigeru Ban: Shaping Sanctuaries.

The exhibition introduces visitors to Shigeru Ban’s humanitarian approach to architecture through immersive installations featuring his signature paper tube structures and the Paper Partition System, a privacy‑providing shelter system developed for people displaced by disaster and conflict. Within these partitions, visitors encounter examples of Ban’s sustainable cardboard bed design, along with displays of both commercial and humanitarian projects created in collaboration with the Voluntary Architects’ Network (VAN).

The exhibition highlights how thoughtful design can support dignity and improve living conditions in emergency situations, while also showcasing Ban’s innovative architectural work around the world.

2026年4月20日から7月17日まで、ワシントンD.C.の在アメリカ日本国大使館広報文化センター（JICC）では「Shigeru Ban: Shaping Sanctuaries 安住の地を紡ぐ」展を開催しています。

本展では、坂茂による人道的な建築活動を紹介し、代表的な紙管構造や、災害や紛争により避難を余儀なくされた人々のために開発されたプライバシー確保のための紙の間仕切りシステム（Paper Partition System）を体験できるインスタレーションを展示しています。

会場内では、紙製ベッドのデザインや、VAN（Voluntary Architects’ Network）と協働して行われている商業・人道両面のプロジェクトも紹介され、緊急時における尊厳の保持や生活環境の改善に建築がどのように寄与しているかを伝えています。また、世界各地で展開されている坂の革新的な建築作品も併せて紹介しています。
